The legislation was introduced by the HSE to manage and control the risks associated with legionnaires disease and how to prevent them.

Legionella Legislation Bacteria

Legionella bacteria can cause fatal pneumonia, 'Legionnaires Disease', and this bacteria can be found in building service systems such as domestic hot and cold water systems and cooling towers.

What do you need to know

As the 'operator' or 'end user' of the building you are required to control the risks associated to legionnaires disease in your home or work place. This can be done by:

Ensuring that you have a legionella risk assessment carried out on your installed systems every 2 years
Assign someone to manage any of the risks pointed out in the risk assessment
Provide up to date records of any changes to the system if you have 5 or more employees.
If you have a cooling tower or evaporative condensers, you will need to advise your local authority that you have these equipment as these have a higher risk of growing the bacteria.
